Academic Therapy

Learning difficulties don’t always fit neatly into labels, and classroom teachers may not have the time or experience to help. Finding a tutor to get students “through 3rd grade” or to “pass history” may not help them in future subjects or give them the tools they need to feel confident and positive about education. Finding an experienced academic therapist willing to work with your child one-on-one can make a significant difference in the daily life and future of your child.

Amy Richter has been educating children for over twenty years. She draws from a variety of sources and materials, such as LiPS®, Orton-Gillingham, Montessori, Waldorf, Ronit Bird, and more. Each session includes games and exercises tailored just to your child, hours of careful preparation, and decades of experience working with many students and teachers.

General Education

Some brilliant students have hard-to-explain “holes” in their knowledge. Maybe numbers are difficult to remember and calculate, or words are missing letters, and sentences missing words. If your child has a learning disability, it may affect many subjects. With our General Education approach, we go back and “fill in the blanks” in all areas. We teach for understanding (not for grades and checkmarks), using the latest research and evidence-based practices available.

Specific Instruction

If your child has difficulty with math, writing, or other specific subjects, it can be difficult to figure out exactly what is happening. Do they have trouble with motor skills? Processing language? Decoding symbols? When a child struggles in only one area, it can be easy for teachers to misinterpret their behavior as “uninterested” or “not performing to potential.” There may be a difficulty that the children themselves cannot define. With Specific Subject Instruction, we will figure out together what is holding them back - and how to address it.

Attention & Organization

For some students, academics are not the problem. Dealing with the ins and outs of attending school, retaining the words of teachers, classmates, and parents, and managing homework, lessons, and emotions is the bigger challenge. We can work together to make each day less overwhelming, and feelings more manageable. By using games, organization tools, and calming techniques, life will get easier for your child - and you.
